Public finance lesson five; blow up money and suffer the consequences

Posted on:31-01-14

Readers must be wondering whether this interminable and boring series of blogs on public finance will ever end. I promise; this is the last of the series. Read more »

Public finance lesson four; managing services at different levels.

Posted on:25-01-14

Last week’s blog explained how it cannot be possible to ‘vote with one’s feet’ as effective service delivery is often a coordinated task that requires the intervention of several levels of government. I also asked readers to identify subject matters that have wide area externalities and which therefore require coordinated action. Read more »

Public finance lesson three; stay back and fight

Posted on:17-01-14

In my blog of 20 December last year, I had progressed to my second lesson in Public finance, before I gave up the subject and went on to discuss amongst other things, the infinitely more interesting one of foreign junkets, and public participation in governance. Now there is no more excuse to procrastinate. Read more »

Peoples’ participation - an era of experimentation

Posted on:10-01-14

The question with which I concluded the previous week’s blog was whether it was possible to involve large numbers of people meaningfully in a democratic process, while giving everybody a reasonable chance to speak out. Could we have a happy marriage of intense one to one discussion, with the power of involving large numbers of people?  Read more »

A digression into peoples’ participation

Posted on:03-01-14

In 2014’s first blog, I continue to digress from the dense topic of public finance theories to the question of peoples’ participation in democracy. This way, I believe I have a better chance of penetrating the brain haze that descends in the last week of the year and continues well into the next. Read more »

A people’s guide to junkets

Posted on:27-12-13

Yesterday, I was on a TV talk show on the subject of members of the Karnataka legislature using taxpayer’s money to go on foreign holidays. The discussion was moderated by an anchor, world renowned for his moderating skills. Read more »

Public finance lesson two: pack up and leave.

Posted on:20-12-13

In my last blog I described how Mancur Olson theorized how governments might have evolved.  To recall, he said that roving bandits, involved in ‘un-coordinated competitive theft’ found that it was in their interest to compromise with their victims by legitimizing their theft in the form of taxes and in return, protecting them from other bandits. Public finance lesson one: a story of bandits

Posted on:13-12-13

Let me start with a caveat. Economists can tune out of the next four blogs, because you guys know it all. I am going to explain some fundamental precepts of public finance to the low forms of pond life masquerading as humanity; namely, those who did not have the good sense to undergo a course in economics and went on to do cheap things like computer science, nuclear science, genetics, language studies, engineering and art.

I will use technical terms in a loose and colloquial sense; I do not want you eco-types to cringe with shame and leap in to exclaim that what I am saying is absolute rubbish. So please go out and party; it is Christmas and New Year time and we do not want your gobbledygook here.

To the less evolved organisms that are left to read this blog, let me confess that I am one of you. This is an explanation of public finance from a biologist who wandered into studying the subject of law. Read more »

Bangalore is a fine city –the conclusive proof

Posted on:06-12-13

In last week’s blog I had written of how Bangalore is now ringed by new, congested and sprawling middle class slums. These have been built on land irregularly converted from agricultural to non-agricultural use, with scant regard for any canons of urban planning. It is estimates that there would be more than 3,50,000 of these structures in the city. That’s a large number of law breakers. Read more »

Bangalore is a fine city

Posted on:29-11-13

This is the fifth installment of what might seem to be an unending rant on my city, Bangalore. Readers who do not have an abiding interest in Bangalore might wonder where all this is leading. Are there solutions to the serious governance crisis that I describe ad-nauseam in my blogs? Read more »
